The Doctor and friends investigate a festive mystery in Titan ComicsDoctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor Holiday Special #1!

Following the conclusion of a stunning first year, Titan Comics have already confirmed that their Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor series will be returning for a second run in January. As BlogtorWho recently reported, the series’ second season will feature an epic multi-Doctor adventure! Season Two #1 will see the Thirteenth Doctor and friends team up with David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor, as well as companion Martha Jones (as portrayed by Freema Agyeman) in a re-imagining of Steven Moffatt‘s iconic 2007 television story Blink.

Before then, Titan Comics are treating us to a two-part holiday special, featuring the Thirteenth Doctor, Ryan, Graham, and Yaz. Although Doctor Who is due to return to our screens on New Year’s Day, many fans will undoubtedly be sad not to see a more conventionally festive story which became a Christmas Day tradition following the series’ revival in 2005. Thankfully, Titan Comics have stepped in to fill that void with a thoroughly Christmas-y adventure starring the current TARDIS team!

Whilst it does refer back to a couple of events and characters previously featured in the Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor series, this Holiday Special tells a largely standalone story. We find the ‘fam’ are brainstorming where and when they should visit to celebrate Christmas. However, after recalling a previous visit to an outer-space theme park (as detailed in this year’s Free Comic Book Day special), it becomes clear that someone or something has been tampering with their memories.

Although the story isn’t immediately traditionally festive, the Doctor and friends’ investigation soon leads them to a snowy Alpine scene straight out of a Christmas card, beautifully illustrated by Roberta Ingranata, Enrica Eren Angiolini, and Shari Chankhamma. What’s more, the Doctor provides her companion with some very seasonally appropriate neurological trackers which look rather like fairy lights. Their search for their missing memories also brings them face-to-face with some rather menacing toy soldiers, and someone who looks rather a lot like Santa Claus! As well as this, another details fans of this current Doctor will surely be glad to see is the return of the multi-coloured scarf she was seen sporting in last year’s New Year’s Day special, Resolution!

In light of the absence of Doctor Who Christmas specials in recent years, the first instalment of Titan Comics‘ Holiday Special sees the welcome return of the festive-yet-frightening quality typical of previous Doctor’s on-screen Christmas adventures. Writer Jody Houser and the rest of the creative team expertly capture the essence of a Doctor Who Christmas special, and one which could have easily aired on-screen last or this December.

We’ll have to wait until the next issue to see exactly why the ‘fam’ have had their minds messed with!
