Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor #7 sees the return of old friends (and enemies), as the Doctor and friends explore another piece of ‘hidden human history’…

This latest instalment of Titan Comics’ ongoing Thirteenth Doctor series marks the penultimate issue of its second-ever story arc. This series has firmly established itself as a must-buy for any fan of the current incarnation of the Doctor and her debut television series. Writer Jody Houser perfectly captures the Thirteenth Doctor and her companions, as do the series’ equally talented team of artists and colourists.

Over the past few issues, the Doctor, Ryan, Yaz, and Graham have found themselves exploring some lesser-known moments from Earth’s past. They’ve visited sixteenth-century northern Europe, and most recently, eighteenth-century North Carolina – two seemingly unconnected points in space and time. However, each of these locations has (seemingly not coincidentally) been the subject of popular podcast ‘Hidden Human History’. What’s more, they’ve also been home to a grotesque and bloodthirsty band of creatures known as the Stilean Flesh Eaters.

At the conclusion of the previous issue, a mysterious but familiar-looking portal opened up in front of the Doctor and company. Two figures stepped through, declaring themselves to be Time Agents!

Old Friends Make A (Sort Of) Welcome Return

Issue #7 opens where last month’s instalment left off. It’s quickly confirmed that these two Time Agents are indeed our old friends Doctors Perkins and Schulz. Avid readers of this series will immediately recognise them as the central characters of its previous story arc, which saw the ‘fam’ help them escape the clutches of treasure-hungry tyrant ‘The Hoarder’. It transpires that whilst it’s only been a week since the Doctor and friends have seen them, they’ve spent almost ten years working for the Time Agency, who they encountered at the end of Issue #4.

However, their presence is far from the main focus of this issue. They’re largely there to provide a counterpoint to the Doctor’s non-violent ethos with their ‘shoot-first-ask-questions-later’ policy.

Instead, our heroes set off to investigate this new piece of ‘hidden human history’ for themselves. As someone who particularly enjoyed the latest television series’ historical episodes, I was disappointed not to see Cary’s Rebellion, which brought the Doctor, Yaz, Ryan, and Graham to North Carolina in the first place, explored to some degree. Nevertheless, this instalment does feature some more satisfying callbacks to previous television stories. The Doctor’s brief reference to her tenth incarnation’s hand-in-a-jar being ‘off in another reality these days’ definitely made me laugh!

In the end, it’s the Stilean Flesh Eaters who turn out to provide the most important and intriguing moment of this issue. Their eventual appearance is accompanied by an unexpected and unnerving revelation which proves that you really are what you eat… It’ll be intriguing to see what repercussions this development will have in next month’s concluding instalment of this arc!

As Issue #7 draws to a close, we’re left with more questions than answers. Despite this, following the success of the series’ previous chapter, I’m optimistic that writer Jody Houser and co will be able to neatly wrap up this rather timey-wimey mystery in the upcoming issue!
