The Doctor’s original game with the villainous Toymaker will soon be re-imagined as a new CG animation

The cover of the next Doctor Who animation is here! The two-disc set of The Celestial Toymaker contains the 1966 story as well as special features. This classic four episode serial stars William Hartnell as the Doctor alongside companions Peter Purves as Steven Taylor and Jackie Lane as Dodo Chaplet. Michael Gough, later best known as Alfred Pennyworth in several Batman films, guest stars as the Toymaker. The godlike villain recently returned for a rematch in the form of Neil Patrick Harris in 60th Anniversary special The Giggle.

The Celestial Toymaker sees the Doctor and companions separated when they come up against the Toymaker. While the Doctor plays the Trilogic Game, Steven and Dodo are forced to play seemingly childish but ultimately dangerous games with the aim of being reunited and getting back to the TARDIS.

All four episodes of the original story were wiped by the BBC to recycle the tape for other filming, though an Australian copy of one was recovered in 1984. Now, the new releases uses CG animation to bring the classic tale back to life. The animation team, freed from 1960s BBC studio limitations, have boldly re-imagined the epic, surreal, vistas of the Celestial Toyroom. But the set also includes the surviving original episode, The Final Test, as well as a reconstruction of the three lost episodes bringing viewers as close as possible to what the story originally looked like in 1966.

Doctor Who: The Celestial Toymaker

When the TARDIS lands in the Celestial Toyroom, its occupants meet a new and deadly opponent. The Toymaker rules this ethereal kingdom, and he desires the Doctor, Steven and Dodo to become his perpetual playthings. While Steven and Dodo face a series of challenges posed by clowns, ballerinas and living playing cards, the Doctor is challenged to play the fiendish Trilogic Game against the Toymaker himself. His only hope of escape is to beat the powerful entity at his own game…

Doctor Who: The Celestial Toymaker can be pre-ordered now on Blu-ray, DVD and Steelbook. However, the release date is still unknown for now.
