I love DWM! Being a young fan, I remember being obsessed with ‘Doctor Who Adventures’ the comparatively younger targeted magazine when the show first came back. After a couple of years, I remember flicking through DWM and although at first the breath of text off was a little off-putting, I decided to give it a go. I have been a loyal subscriber since 2013. This month sees the magazine turn 500, and the milestone hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Complete with a giant poster, art card and set of stickers (and you never thought you needed a sticker of Paul Cornell’s head!)There is a definite 80’s feel that harks back to the very first, realised in October 1979. Long-time readers will feel like kids again!

A particular highlight is a heart-warming message from Doctor Who legend Tom Baker, He spoke candidly about his future and his relationship with the magazine. “Your readers, their kindness, it takes my breath away.” More to come from Tom in next month’s issue.

The extensive interview with Steven Moffatt reads like you are sat down in conversation with him. He explains the process of finding the new companion, keeping it secret and a nerve-racking met up with future show runner Chris Chibnell. Peter Capaldi answers questions once put to the First Doctor, William Hartnell in a special ‘joint interview’!

There is another interesting feature in which Mark Gatiss, Gareth Roberts and Clayton, reveal their plans to bring Doctor Who back in 2001, and what might have been.

This issue also contains old features such as Pick of the Penguin, Relative Dimesons Prizes/competitions and The Fact of Fiction that puts 2013’s ‘Day of the Doctor’ and contains information that even the most avid of fans wouldn’t have known.

It wouldn’t be DWM without a comic strip! Here many past artists grace individual pages in ‘The Stockbridge Showdown’, including Dave Gibbons, John Ridgway, Dan McDaid, Roger Langridge, Adrian Salmon, John Ross, Martin Geraghty, David A Roach and Mike Collins. The slightly longer story brings back an old favourite that loyal readers will remember: Maxwell Eddison. The storyline itself is exciting and action packed!

The extra magazine contains images of every cover of DWM, with in-depth details about the process of putting ideas to print. it is very interesting to discover how much effort it takes to overcome the many difficulties that arise. All this is completed with a lovely introduction by ex-showrunner Russell T Davis.

The magazine in many ways is like the TV show, throughout its many changes over the years. it always keeps its mission at the heart. It kept the flame lit throughout the wildness years, finding a way to work with very little content. And celebrate not only the show itself but the fans who love it Here’s to the next 500!

Even if you’re not a regular reader this is an issue not to be missed! In stores now for £9.99, for more information and to find out which cover was voted as the best ever (!) visit
