Doctor Who’s Alex Kingston joins Strictly Come Dancing to take the dancefloor by storm

The BBC have now announced the first of this year’s lineup of celebrity contestants for Strictly Come Dancing. And there’s a certain time travelling archeologist with amazing hair among them. Yes, Alex Kingston, who played River Song in several episodes of Doctor Who between 2008’s Silence in the Library and 2015’s The Husbands of River Song.

Kingston won hearts (including the Doctor’s) with her mischief making and wit, and was quite literally part of the TARDIS family during the Matt Smith era. Of course, Kingston had been winning fans for years already, from Grange Hill to Moll Flanders and ER.

The actor will be looking to charm audiences again for Strictly Come Dancing. The weekly dance competition, which pairs inexperienced celebrities with some of the world’s best professional dancers returns next month. Each week the judges’ scores are combined with the public vote to decide who goes home. In the end only one couple can hold aloft the iconic Glitterball Trophy.

The competition’s now in its 22nd season, and continues to draw contestants from every segment of the entertainment and sporting worlds. (Meaning you won’t have heard of half of them, but all of them are known to millions.)

Competing on the dancefloor alongside Alex Kingston will be:

  • Athlete Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (Olympic sprinter, and Gladiators’ Nitro)
  • Podcaster George Clarke (The Useless Hotline, The Fellas Podcast)
  • TV personality Dani Dyer (Love Island, Absolutely Dyer)
  • Footballer Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
  • Actor Balvinder Sopal (EastEnders)

The BBC will reveal more names shortly.

In an official statement about her involvement in this year’s Strictly, Alex Kingston simply said ”Aaaaagghhh!!!!!!”

Due to the format of the show Strictly success is about more then just pure ability. There’s the importance of a contestant’s existing fan base, and their ability to show a mix of personality and hard work. On both counts, Kingston should be well placed to do well. Now, we just need to see about the dancing…
