David Tennant seems to have fallen in love with improv and Marvel.  He is appearing in LA in Groundling’s famous improv plays, Cooking with Gas and And he most recently appeared in Channel 4 – Hang Ups where he did a passable Spiderman audition.  (We’re not sure he would get the part.)

Based on Lisa Kudrow’s Web Therapy and created by Robert Delaware and Stephen Mangan, Hang Ups is a  comedy series about an online therapist, Dr Richard Pitt.  Richard has run into some financial difficulties and has lost his office location so he has had to resort to conducting his therapy sessions via the Internet.  The result some truly bizarre patients with some very unique problems.

Since the series is based on the online interaction between Richard, his patients and his family, the production team were able to film each episode, quickly, over a few days.  As a result,  Mangan was able to enlist the talents of many well-known actors.

The series features a number of Doctor Who alumni appearing in the improvised episodes  Most notably, Jessica Hynes from Human Nature / The Family of Blood, who portrays Richard’s uncaring sister and the Great Intelligence, Richard E Grant, is Richard’s therapist.  Both David Tennant and David Bradley are patients of the good doctor.  Katherine Parkinson, Celia Imrie and Charles Dance appear as Richard’s wife and parents.

The production team ended up with more material than they could handle so they have also been sharing a number of clips on social media, twitter and online.  If you visit the official Twitter for the series – @HangUpsOfficial – you can view these episodes.

In the meantime we will leave you with David’s impression of Jerry Hall.

Hang Ups, starring Stephen Mangan airs on Channel 4, Wednesdays at 10 pm  or see it online at Channel 4 website.
