Big Finish Productions have named Sophie Cowdrey as the winner of their competition to find a new cover artist for Vortex.
Cowdrey’s illustration of River Song will be seen on the cover of the September issue of Vortex. Vortex is Big Finish’s promotional magazine, shipped with orders of Big Finish CDs. It is also available in digital form free from their website. Cowdrey’s issue will be available from the 1st of September.
Cowdrey studied Television and Film Set Design at the University of South Wales and is currently a trainee at Netflix. She’s also been known as a popular fan artist for a number of years. However, her popularity recently exploded after she produced a number of pieces depicting Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor. Meanwhile, in addition to illustrating the September issue of Vortex, she has recently been announced as one of the illustrators of BBC Books’ Doctor Who: The Women Who Lived, out on September 27th.
On her win, Cowdrey said “I am so incredibly delighted to have my artwork chosen for the Vortex competition! I’m constantly amazed at the level of quality from Big Finish – the stories are completely immersive and so enjoyable. Thrilled to have this opportunity to contribute art to the wider universe of my favourite show. Thank you!”
Big Finish were “taken aback” by the quality of the art
Vortex editor Kenny Smith was keen to thank everyone who took part in the competition. “I was genuinely taken aback by the quality of entries we received for the competition. Looking through them was a pleasurable way to spend a Saturday morning, and coming up with my shortlist of three was incredibly tough. I changed my mind three times! Well done to all who entered – you’re a very talented bunch.”
Meanwhile, Big Finish Executive Producer Nicholas Briggs was no less effusive in his praise. “It’s really lovely to see all the enthusiasm bursting out of so many brilliant pieces of artwork. It’s long been said that Doctor Who inspires creativity in the people who love it, and I think that’s doubly true for followers of Big Finish. We’re privileged to have these people enjoying our work, and it’s been such fun enjoying theirs in return.”
