David and Georgia Tennant’s son Ty joins Timothy Dalton, Jovian Wade, and Michelle Gomez in the TV series based on the DC Comics book
There’s yet more Doctor Who adjacent casting news from the world of Doom Patrol this weekend. It’s been reported by The Direct that Ty Tennant, son of David and Georgia, is joining the cast of the DC Comics TV show. Ty will be playing one of the Dead Boy Detectives, Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine. However whether he’s playing present day Charles or Edwardian Edwin has not yet been revealed. Charles and Edwin are two ghosts, murdered decades apart, who set out as junior sleuths of the Enid Blyton tradition. But, inevitably, they’re drawn to crimes of the macabre and supernatural. Created by Neil Gaiman (The Doctor’s Wife) and Matt Wagner in the pages of The Sandman comic book, they’ve continued to appear in the years since, graduating to their own Dead Boy Detectives comic.
The Dead Boy Detectives weren’t part of the original Doom Patrol comic series. But they do have an established friendship with Doom Patrol member Dorothy Spinner (Abigail Shapiro). All three appeared in the Children’s Crusade mini-series which saw various children from across the darker end of the DC Comics universe team up. Meanwhile, Doom Patrol’s second season ends with Dorothy going missing. So it’s possible Tennant’s role will be as an ally to Dorothy in her quest to return home. With the Dead Boy Detectives’ origins in The Sandman, it’s unclear yet if Tennant will be reprising his role for the upcoming Netflix adaptation of that comic.
Doom Patrol tells the often surreal adventures of a group of B-list superheroes called when the Justice League aren’t available
Tennant joins a show that features a number of Doctor Who veterans. The team’s leader, Dr. Niles ‘Chief’ Caulder, is played by onetime Rassilon Timothy Dalton. Jovian Wade, Rigsy in the Doctor Who episodes Flatline and Face the Raven, is also part of the team as Victor Stone, aka Cyborg. Meanwhile, the main villain of season three will be Missy herself, in the form of Michelle Gomez’ Madame Rouge.
Doom Patrol tells the story of a team of misfit B-list superheroes. Together they specialise in only the most bizarre and surreal threats to planet Earth. Other castmembers include Brendan Fraser (The Mummy) as Robotman and Diane Guerrero (Orange is the New Black) as Crazy Jane. Meanwhile, Matt Bomer (American Horror Story) is Negative Man and April Bowlby (Drop Dead Diva) plays Elasti-Girl.
The Dead Boy Detective is Tennant’s second major screen role. He was Tom in the American-French production of War of the Worlds for two series, as one of the survivors struggling to overcome in a conquered world. His fellow Dead Boy Detective will be played by Sebastian Croft. Croft is best known as playing the young Ned Stark in Game of Thrones flashbacks, and as a vampiric child in Penny Dreadful.
