Torchwood returns as Rowena Cooper reprises her role as Queen Victoria, in a brand new, full-cast audio drama, Torchwood: Fortitude, released today from Big Finish Productions.

Queen Victoria who famously founded of the Torchwood Institute to protect against Doctor in the 2006 Doctor Who TV series story, Tooth and Claw.  And once again the reigning sovereign is not happy.  Trapped in one of the forts with Maharaja Duleep Singh of Lahore and the Sikh ruler of Punjab, the two are under siege by ghosts.

Writer/producer James Goss has written this historical story about the first days of the Torchwood Institute.“The early days of Torchwood are fascinating. Queen Victoria’s just such a complicated historical figure. This is a woman who decided that she was going to take over pretty much all of Europe and Russia through carefully controlled marriage and treaties, and the East India Company. It’s an amazing ambition. She’s a monster.

The story features a unique Victoria historical sea fort that still can be found in Solent, UK.  A series of sea forts were built in the 1860s as part of Palmerston (Lord Palmerston & Prime Minister) Forts a.k.a. Palmerston’s Follies to protect against an invasion from the French.

Goss also elaborates on a unique feature of this story the Solent sea forts.  “This story also features the Solent sea-forts, which are real. They were known as Lord Palmerston’s Folly because he ordered them built to stop an invasion from France which never came. The construction of each of them cost about £150m in today’s money. Two and a half of them are now quite swanky hotels and, yes, I have stayed in one of them.”

The Torchwood adventures are one of Big Finish’s most popular collections with actors from the original television series – John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Kai Owen and Gareth David-Lloyd all reprising their roles from Torchwood.
