The Doctor Donna are back! Russell T Davies and the BBC have revealed David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be part of the 2023 Anniversary celebrations!

One of the most loved pairings in Doctor Who’s history have reunited and are filming scenes that are due to air in 2023 to coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary celebrations! The Doctor and Donna parted ways when the Doctor had to wipe Donna’s memory, making her forget him, in order to save her life. He left her family with a warning: if ever she remembers, she will die. But with the two coming face to face once more, the big question is, just what brings the two back together? David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be back as the Doctor and Donna Noble. But how?

Tennant famously returned to the show before for the 50th Anniversary special The Day of the Doctor. He’s also recorded a number of series of The Tenth Doctor Adventures, Dalek Universe, as well as assorted cameos, for Big Finish Productions. Catherine Tate too has returned as Donna for Big Finish, both alongside Tennant and in her own spin-off Kidnapped. But this will be the first time in a decade either of them have been seen in the Whoniverse on TV.

Russell T Davies, showrunner explained. Or rather, explained that he wouldn’t be explaining what on Earth is happening… yet. “They’re back!” he said, “And it looks impossible – first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?  Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime.”

What? WHAT?! WHAT?!?!

In his last ever episode, David’s critically acclaimed portrayal of the Doctor famously said “I don’t want to go…” Well it seems he – and fans across the globe – have got what they wanted as the iconic duo are on their way back. Those same fans will also be feverishly speculating about exactly how and why our heroes are back together. Could this be the return of the Meta-Crisis Doctor created in Journey’s End and last seen on a beach in a parallel universe? Or has the Doctor found a way to put right Donna’s unfair fate? Perhaps, even, it’s all in Donna’s head as her hidden memories begin to intrude on the real world?

The only thing more fun than guessing will be finding out once and for all next year. Allons-y!

Doctor Who continues this Autumn with the Thirteenth Doctor’s final episode, ahead of the 60th Anniversary celebrations next year

  1. I hope David Tennant is reprising The Metacrisis Tenth Doctor for the 60th anniversary. Because I do theorise that The Metacrisis Tenth Doctor has been pulled from the parallel universe ( where he spent the rest of his life with Rose Tyler) to the main universe. Which could explain why both The Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble were brought together in the first place and why he’s the owner ship of The Thirteenth Doctor’s TARDIS.
