The BBC have announced that Peter Capaldi will be the next actor to play The Doctor. Capaldi was announced on Doctor Who Live – The Next Doctor earlier this evening, click on the image above for a bigger, twelvier version. Older readers may remember Capaldi starred in the 2008 story, The Fires of Pompeii.

much hype and speculation, Peter Capaldi was unveiled as the next

will be the Twelfth Doctor and takes over from Matt Smith who leaves the

YES! YES! YES!!!
It's John Frobisher from Torchwood!!
He will be amazing. He's an absolutely astonishingly good actor. He has warmth and charm, combined with the capacity to scare the crap out of you. So, of all the non-female, non-ethnic minority actors considered for the role I'm glad it's him.
But I can't help being a little disappointed. I really, really wanted the Doctor to be non-white and/or female. Nevermind. And yes, I understand why people have objections to a female Doctor, and I understand that Moffat and the Beeb had a tough call to make, replacing an actor as phenomenally popular as Matt Smith, and that they did the sensible, safe thing in opting for a well-known, acclaimed dramatic actor. But still. A little sigh.
Anyway, positives – as noted above, he's a great actor. He's a fan (that letter he wrote as a kid was freakin' adorable). He's absolutely magnetic – you CANNOT take your eyes off him when he's onscreen. Spectacular range vocally and emotively. He will scare the bejeesus out of the Daleks. And he's older, so presumably no more of this Doctor/Companion relationship nonsense… back to the good old days, as it were. I only hope they let him retain his accent, and give him a great costume (poor, poor Colin).
(And how nice was it to see Janet Fielding, Colin Baker, Peter Davison, Bernard Cribbins, Anneke Wills and the rest, giving their recollections and thoughts?)
I think it the right choice for the doctor, looking forward to Xmas
Well-I think of New Doctors in terms of baby steps. Casting an older Doctor in NuWho was controversial- look at the posts claiming-OMG, this guy is sooo old-I don't want the Doctor to be my Grandfather.
But yes, this is a great game changer and a change for a bit of a revamp of the show. I do think Moffat was always going for an older Doctor but saw something in Matt Smith. Who has done a fantastic job with some rather dodgy scripts.
It's all good and hopefully No. 13 can be the non-white/minority/woman Doctor.
As someone of the same age group, I am so excited at all the new possibilities for River and the doctor. I hope Moffttt will embrace this and that Alex K. Is free and willing to return to Doctor Who.

Brilliant news; couldn't be happier with the choice, after incorrectly thinking they would cast someone for the 'girls'.

I also don't see the obsession with people from "minority" groups being the doctor. It is a british show, the doctor should always be a white male, because that is how it has always been.

Very glad with this choice. It was time for a seasoned gentleman I think. Not to insinuate Capaldi is an old man like us Baker-rememberers! I always thought Ian Richardson would have been good.
Glad to see the BBC didn't give in to the PC brigade. White, British, and male or GTFO!
(PS: I say the above not because I'm racist, xenophobic, or sexist, but because a) I like the existing format/continuity, and b) having to address issues such as gender identity and historic racism (both of which you would have no choice but to address) would be a complete distraction from what the show should be about: fun and adventure, with a little bit of history thrown in.)
