The appropriately retro cover to BBC Books‘ modern take on the classic Target Doctor Who novelizations has now been released, along with further details about the content
Back in May, Blogtor Who reported on the upcoming Target Storybook. A tribute to the Target novelizations of classic Doctor Who episodes, the hardback volume expands on existing episodes from the show’s history in fifteen new short stories. Now new details have been confirmed, including the front cover by popular artist Anthony Dry. The artist has been associated with Doctor Who since he provided the covers for the Nest Cottage Chronicles audio series. More recently he drew covers for novelizations of Rose, Christmas Invasion, Day of the Doctor and Twice Upon a Time.
Apart from Dry’s artwork, the cover also features the 1996 Doctor Who logo to be consistent with Target books from the past several years. It even includes the BBC TV logo used from 1971 to 1988 and which graced many classic Target covers. Only the front and spine of the cover, featuring Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor alongside Tom Baker, Colin Baker, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi, has been revealed so far. However the full wraparound image will ultimately depict all the Doctors.
The list of authors for the Target Storybook has also been finalized
The line-up of writers has been tweaked slightly, including the confirmation of several previously rumoured contributors. It includes Doctor Who television writers Terrence Dicks, Vinay Patel and Joy Wilkinson, as well as actors Colin Baker (the Sixth Doctor) and Matthew Waterhouse (Adric). Alongside them are a host of established and first time authors of Doctor Who novels and short stories. The finalized line-up of authors consists of:
- Colin Baker
- Steve Cole
- Jenny T Colgan
- Susie Day
- Terrance Dicks
- Simon Guerrier
- George Mann
- Una McCormack
- Vinay Patel
- Jacqueline Rayner
- Beverley Sanford
- Matthew Sweet
- Mike Tucker
- Matthew Waterhouse
- Joy Wilkinson
As well as the authors, the book also features illustrations by Mike Collins. Collins is well known for his work on the Doctor Who Magazine comic strip and as a storyboard artist for the TV show. His designs have also been a major element of Doctor Who merchandise branding for the past several years. No previews of Collins’s illustrations have yet been made available. However they have been described as “tattoo worthy” and “fabulous” by the authors.
Meanwhile, Vinay Patel has announced details of his contribution. His short story Letters from the Front will be a prequel expanding on his television story Demons of the Punjab. And Jenny Colgan has likewise revealed hers is set in the aftermath of Rose and the Metacrisis Doctor being left at Bad Wolf Bay.
The Target Storybook will be released on the 24th of October and can be pre-ordered now from Amazon and other retailers.
