The Doctor claims to understand baby speak. According to him, Alfie – the infant son of Craig Owens (James Corden) and Sophie (Daisy Haggard) referred to his respective parents as “Not Mum” and “Mum”.
And if the eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) is to be believed Alfie preferred to be addressed as “Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All”.
The Doctor’s grasp of ‘baby’ continued recently with the twelve Doctor (Peter Capaldi) in The Girl Who Died.
Although played as a joke in Closing Time, i liked how the ability was played serious – in fact, poetic – in Girl Who Died. One of Series 9’s many underappreciated moments.
