The grandfatherly First Doctor is the original form of the Doctor, portrayed by William Hartnell from 1963 to 1966, and once more for The Three Doctors – the 10th year anniversary episode.

Born in 1908 Hartnell started his career as a theatre stagehand before appearing in many Shakespeare plays and Carry On films (couldn’t be any more different!) before becoming the Doctor and a household name in 1963.

Hartnell passed away in 1975.
