Soon you’ll be able to walk in and find a Yeti on the turntable at Tooting Bec as Demon Music Group presents The Abominable Snowmen on vinyl

In the classic 1967 serial The Abominable Snowmen Patrick Troughton’s Doctor found himself among the Himalayas of the 1930s. But he and his companions Jamie (Frazer Hines) and Victoria (Deborah Watling) soon discover that all is not well at the roof of the world. The monastery the Doctor remembers so well from his previous visit now exists in a state of paranoia and terror; the local Yeti have abandoned their shy and timid nature to become savage killers; an English explorer is out for revenge, and deep in a mountain cave, something monsterous is preparing to rise.

Five of the six episodes missing from the BBC Archive. So the soundtrack has been the only way to experience the whole story. Now new life has been brought to that soundtrack by Demon Music Group with an exclusive new vinyl edition.

A classic serial reaches out across the decades to be reborn once more

The Abominable Snowmen is presented across 3 x heavyweight 180g pieces of vinyl. The narrated TV soundtrack evokes another classic Doctor Who adventure in all its aural magnificence. The haunting sounds of the windswept Himalayas, the hypnotic chanting of Tibetan monks, the insistent bleeping of the Yeti control devices, and the terrifying roar of the creatures themselves are all accompanied by the eerie sonics of Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire’s classic theme tune.

Linking narration is provided by Frazer Hines, who played Jamie in the original adventure. Guest stars include Jack Watling as Professor Travers, David Spenser as Thonmi and Wolfe Morris as Padmasambhava.

Written by Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln, The Abominable Snowmen would leave an enduring legacy. The Yeti themselves would later return in The Web of Fear, while their evil master the Great Intelligence would go on to menace the Eleventh Doctor in The Snowmen, The Bells of Saint John and The Name of the Doctor.

The limited edition ‘Tibetan Blizzard’ version will be an Amazon exclusive

The release will also be available in a Limited Edition exclusive to Amazon, in a pressing of only 500 copies. The Amazon version is a beautiful transparent vinyl featuring a ‘Tibetan Blizzard’ pattern distinct from the plain white of the standard edition.

Cuddlier than the Daleks… but no less terrifying!

Ben Stanley, Demon Music Group’s head of Product & Marketing, notes that the new release is just the latest in their successful Who Vinyl line. “The Daleks’ Master Plan and The Evil of the Daleks have proved hugely popular on vinyl. We’re very pleased to be following up these releases with the story of another classic Doctor Who enemy.”

Stanley is confident that The Abominable Snowmen will continue the run of hits. After all, “the Yeti may be fluffier than the Daleks but they’re certainly no less terrifying!”
