Doctor Who fans attending San Diego Comic Con Special Edition this week will get the chance to vote on their choice for who should play the next Doctor
For decades as soon as the BBC announce a new Doctor, fans start speculating about who will replace them. But with Jodie Whittaker having already filmed her final scenes, and Russell T Davies already waiting in the wings to return to the show he relaunched, perhaps now is the time to truly start pondering the Fourteenth Doctor’s identity in earnest. And this Friday’s The Future of Doctor Who panel at San Diego Comic Con includes an interactive section letting attendees have their say on who should be the next Doctor.
The panel themselves have their own ideas about who the new Doctor might be. There’s the perennial call for Richard Ayoade (The Crystal Maze), of course. While others would like to go back to an older Doctor with Kris Marshall (Death in Paradise), who’d be fifty-one by the time Series 14 came around. There’s a lot of nostalgia for the Harry Potter films of the 00s too, with both Rupert Grint (Ron) and Harry Melling (Dudley) mooted by the panel. While others on the panel look to recent genre hit Good Omens, wanting either of its stars Michael Sheen or David Tennant to be the Fourteenth Doctor. Yes, that’s right, that David Tennant.
Audience members at the panel will also have the chance to add their own favourites to the mix
The above may seem some pretty unlikely candidates, with only Michael Sheen a real possibility. But the eccentricity of the list helps illustrate just how wide a range of opinion there is on what qualities make an actor ‘Doctorish.’ Elsewhere, given Davies’ tendency to use actors he already has a relationship with, and their undeniable talent, many fans (and the bookies) have been speculating about Lydia West and Omari Douglas. And there as many other names in the ether as their Doctor Who fans to speculate them.
The audience at the panel will also be able to add their own names to the ballot at the fan panel. If you’re attending SDCC Special Edition, you can have your say at Room 8 of the San Diego Convention Center at 2.30pm on Friday November 26.
Doctor Who: Flux continues next Sunday at 6.25pm on BBC One, and on BBC America and AMC+ in the US, with Chapter Five: Survivors of the Flux
As the forces of evil mass, the Doctor, Yaz and Dan face perilous journeys and seemingly insurmountable obstacles in their quest for survival.
