Russell T Davies reveals that Jodie Whittaker’s regeneration episode is complete and that he’s seen the final version!

Russell T Davies appeared on the BBC’s The One Show yesterday to discuss his award winning drama It’s A Sin. But while there he revealed that just a few days ago he saw the final episode of his predecessor’s era! He confirmed that it’s a feature length special running ninety minutes and described it as “fantastic” and “gorgeous.” He also briefly recapped what the BBC had already announced about next year’s 60th Anniversary, with David Tennant and Catherine Tate returning, and Neil Patrick Harris playing the villain. However, he explained the focus should remain for now on the Thirteenth Doctor’s upcoming farewell.

“What’s coming up in October is Jodie Whittaker’s farewell,” said Davies. “So I feel like I’m upstaging her slightly. I just saw the finished version of that two days ago. It’s a 90-minute epic. It’s fantastic. That is gorgeous, with lots of surprises.”

This also confirms for the first time that the regeneration episode will air this October. Fans had long speculated an October date, but officially the BBC still referred to it as simply “later this year.” The BBC commissioned Whittaker’s last Doctor Who episode as part of a programme of celebrations marking the Corporation’s centenary. With the exact date of the centenary being the 18th of October, it was always likely that schedules would cluster the various special shows marking it around that date. We still don’t know exactly when in October Doctor Who’s contribution will air, but sometime in that week of the 17th to the 23rd seems most probable.

As well as Doctor Who, other programs in the centenary schedule include:

  • Here’s One I Made Earlier – Konnie Huq celebrates the BBC’s history of children’s programs
  • Horrible Histories: BBC’s Big Birthday Bonanza – the Horrible Histories team whizz through the history of the BBC as only they can
  • The Love Box in Your Living Room – Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse present a possibly not entirely accurate account of how the BBC came to be
  • The Battle of Savoy Hill – a five part radio drama set during the BBC’s crucial formative years
  • The Sonic Century – a radio documentary about the impact of the radio medium on British society over the past century
  • Plus – special themed episodes of Strictly Come Dancing, Top Gear, MasterChef, The Apprentice and Antiques Roadshow.
