Torchwood gets experimental once more in this new audio adventure from Big Finish and the results are spectacular! Tropical Beach Sounds and Other Relaxing Seascapes #4 is truly an experience that fully absorbs you if you’ll allow it to do so.

First things first, this is not something you should be playing on a busy morning commute, or as you clean your house, or anything else that might distract you. To get the full experience you should follow the advice of any good, relaxing self-help tape and just sit back and close your eyes without worry of any interruptions. This way it is so easy to see the Hub (and the beautiful beach) and the Torchwood team. Though the only voice speaking throughout is that of Sir Michael Palin narrating on this tape and in our minds, both soothing and disturbing in equal measures. He puts his all into this script and relishes the challenge of carrying such a unique story.

It isn’t entirely a solo performance. A review of this story is not complete without thorough praise for the music and sound that draw the listener completely inside. A huge shoutout to Blair Mowat and Richard Fox on those respective fronts. The fight between the tropical tunes and “reality” just reinforce the strange, caged feelings of the main character (otherwise known as “you”). There is also one moment in particular, featuring an interaction with Owen Harper, in which the sound effects created a perfect, terrible image in my mind and gave me chills.

One of the best things about Tim Foley’s wonderfully crafted script is just how interactive it can be. Listeners can put themselves into the mind and body of the protagonist (well, strictly speaking it isn’t their body). They can even follow some certain instructions from the entrancing Voice, repeating the phrases it asks you to speak. Just don’t hold your breath too long.

This newest release really is one of the best Torchwood audios out there. The risk-taking that makes this audio possible is what makes it such a unique and intriguing experience. It could also be a great audio to suggest to friends who have been hesitant to try listening to Big Finish stories. It is one of their most clear examples that this storytelling medium is not a hindrance, but an opportunity.
