Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor #9 sees the Doctor, Yaz, Ryan, and Graham embark on a new adventure, and reconnect with an old friend!

Last month’s instalment of Titan Comics‘ ongoing Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor series saw the surprising but satisfying conclusion to the ‘fam’s journey through ‘Hidden Human History’.

Now, Issue #9 opens up a new chapter in the current TARDIS team’s comic-book adventures. Previous arcs have taken us to the farthest corners of outer space, and on a whistle-stop tour of Earth’s recent history. If this opening issue is anything to go by, this latest arc looks set to take the Doctor, Yaz, Graham, and Ryan to a whole host of new and exciting places and times!

If you’ve not jumped on board Titan‘s Thirteenth Doctor series yet, this issue is the perfect place to start, as the gang set out on a brand-new journey across space and time!

The Trial of a Time Lord

Issue #9 opens with the ‘fam’ watching a parade on a distant alien planet. In these opening panels, we’re treated to some especially beautiful and intricate artwork, courtesy of artist and colourists Roberta IngranataEnrica Eren Angiolini, and Viviana Spinelli. However, the gang’s downtime is quickly cut short. The Doctor finds herself imprisoned by the Devivians, and charged with the theft of the sacred gem of Niag. A being with two hearts and dark, coiled hair is said to be the culprit. This description leads the Doctor to suspect that an old frenemy of hers could be who they’re after, as she deduces that none other than Missy (otherwise known as the Master) is behind the theft.

After escaping from the Devivians’ prison, the Doctor and friends set about tracking down Missy. It’s difficult to say more about the events of this issue without giving too much away. It is worth nothing that, deliberately or not, so far the look of this story appears brilliantly Star Wars-esque, complete with hovering spacecraft and a rowdy cantina. Nevertheless, it’s safe to say the Doctor does reunite with an old friend, but perhaps not the one you’re expecting…

Following this opening chapter’s surprising cliffhanger, ‘Old Friends‘ looks set to be one of the series’ most compelling arcs yet. Writer Jody Houser looks to be taking full advantage of the comic format by using this story to delve deeper into an existing character from the Doctor Who universe. Readers will no doubt be intrigued as to where this arc might take our heroes next, as right now it’s anyone’s guess!

Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor #9 is available now from all good comic retailers.
