Titan Comics Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor Adventures #2.7 – Cover B

The latest issue of Titan Comics Eleventh Doctor series is a bit of a mash-up.

Accused of a crime he cannot remember, the Doctor flees through time and space from the temporal bounty hunter the Then and Now who has been sent to kill him.

The one person who can help is the time traveler’s wife, Professor River Song, and he springs her from jail in order for her to prove that he is innocent of mass murder.

They head to one of the most dangerous places in the universe, the Time Lord prison planet of Shada, a place so terrifying that the Time Lords erased its name from time itself . . . Shada takes its name from the abandoned television story written by Douglas Adams for fourth Doctor Tom Baker.

On Shada third Doctor Jon Pertwee’s foil, Roger Delgardo’s Master plays a central role. It’s a very long time indeed since we’ve seen that incarnation of the Doctor’s nemesis.

Accompanying the Doctor and River Song on their impossible adventure is chain-sword-wielding mercenary Abslom Daak, created for the 1980 comic Abslom Daak: Dalek Killer, as well as a mysterious character called The Squire who.

Writer Rob Williams’s script is as fast paced and fun as any eleventh Doctor story and, thanks to the format that comic books afford, there’s plenty of room for classic Doctor Who stories with multiple parts and cliffhangers galore. Williams has found the voice of both the Doctor and River Song to such an extent that you can almost hear Matt Smith and Alex Kingston speak the lines.

The artwork, by Leandro Casco, Simon Fraser and Gary Caldwell, is far from the photo-real art of other titles. Instead, it conveys a sense of character and form and does an okay job in the bargain.
