For readers of Blogtor Who, the 23rd of November is now and forever, Doctor Who Day. It’s the anniversary of the broadcast of the very first episode An Unearthly Child, and both fans and the BBC use it every year to celebrate the show. This year, BBC Studios have teamed up with CinemaLive and Fathom Entertainment. Together, they’re inviting fans to Doctor Who: The Satan Pit Extended Cut. One of the Doctor and Rose’s most chilling and atmospheric adventures will be on the big screen for the first time. It’s a special one-night-only Doctor Who Day cinema event taking place on the 23rd of November 2026. And over 1,000 cinemas across the UK, Ireland, U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand are taking part.
Moreover, this Doctor Who: The Satan Pit – Extended Movie Cut will present the two episode story The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit as a newly re-edited, movie-length cinematic cut. Deleted scenes, previously only available on physical media releases, have been re-integrated into the story alongside never-before-seen extended footage. Fans already widely regard the two-parter as one of the standout stories of modern Doctor Who. Now the movie edition features more scale, horror, and emotional stakes than ever before.
The screening will also feature an exclusive interview with International Emmy and multiple BAFTA Award winning director and producer James Strong, reflecting on the making of one of the most celebrated stories of the modern Doctor Who era.
Fans across three continents will unite for this unique Doctor Who Day event
Natasha Spence, Global Events Director, BBC Studios, said: “Part of what makes Doctor Who so extraordinary is that there is always more to discover. Even with a story as loved as The Impossible Planet and The Satan Pit, we’re able to offer fans something they haven’t experienced before, with previously deleted scenes restored into the adventure and never-before-seen extended footage included in this special cinema cut. Doctor Who Day is the perfect moment to celebrate that sense of discovery with fans. We’re delighted to be working with CinemaLive again to bring this unforgettable Tenth Doctor and Rose story to the big screen, and to give audiences the chance to experience it together in cinemas for the first time”.
