We will have to wait until next year for the actual show, but Miwk Publishing will be publishing a book in May that is a perfect companion for the months without a new Doctor Who. The book, called Time and Spaces: A Photo Journal of Doctor Who Filming celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Doctor Who movie, which was filmed on location in Vancouver. Actor/photographer Yee Jee Tso collected his memories and stunning photographs from the making of the movie, featuring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor.
The film aired on television in 1996, and Tso took photographs throughout the shooting. He also wrote extensive notes about recollections about making the movie, including some history about the locations themselves. In a fascinating update, Tso re-visited the film sites in 2015 and took “then and now” shots of the Doctor Who locations. Miwk Publishers calls the book “a love letter to the Doctor Who movie” and it will be published in a beautiful hardcover, full colour edition. Many of the photographs will be published for the first time.
The Doctor Who movie was an attempt to bring back the Doctor Who series after it ended in 1989. McGann played the role of the Eighth Doctor, and is the still the only Doctor Who to have been filmed in Canada. In an interesting twist, two other actors were invited to audition for the role of the Eighth Doctor: Christopher Eccleston and Peter Capaldi.
Tso played the role of Chang Lee, a gangster in San Francisco who was accidentally saved by the sudden appearance of the Doctor and the TARDIS. Lee is at first controlled by the Master, played to the hilt by Eric Roberts, but finally is able to break free and work with the Doctor. The movie has inspired some interesting discussions about companions and the Doctor. Tso himself thinks that his character, Chang Lee, is actually one of the rare companions of the Master.
