Best Supporting Actor in a Musical
Peter Davison and Mark Gatiss

Doctor Who alumni Peter Davison and Mark Gatiss have both been nominated for the 16th Annual WhatsOnStage awards. The only theatre awards voted for by the audience.

Ex-Time Lord Peter Davison is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for his role as manager Herbie in the 2015 West End revival of ‘Gypsy‘ opposite Imelda Staunton’s Mama Rose. Gypsy is the story of famous striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee and her domineering ‘show business mother’. The show ended after an eight-month run in November 2015.

Davison is joined by Doctor Who/Sherlock writer and actor Mark Gatiss who is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Play for ‘Three Days in the Country‘. Based on Russian novelist Ivan Turgenev’s comedic tale of summer and passion. The National Theatre production saw Gatiss as Shpigelsky, a country Doctor (the medical kind!) who is very happy being the centre of attention. Gatiss was joined in the play by another familiar Doctor Who face, John Simm – The Master (2007-2010).

Also, among the nominees are Benedict Cumberbatch for his portrayal of ‘Hamlet’ at the Barbican, Alex Hassell for his outstanding performance as ‘Henry V’ for the Royal Shakespeare Company and Beverly Knight for her role as Grizabella in ‘Cats’.

Support these talented actors by voting at the WhatsonStage website. Voting closes on the 31st January (limited to 1 per person). The winners will be announced in a special concert on the 21st February. An event you can also be part of. Tickets are still available.
