Current Doctor Who Peter Capaldi has taken time out of his busy schedule to talk to Wales Online about his future on the show.

A decision that is proving difficult it seems. “I haven’t made my mind up about that yet”, he says. “Mainly because I don’t want to have to make that decision. I’m trying to avoid it!”.

Capaldi is openly known as one of the biggest Who fans around and is clearly having the time of his life on the show only adding to the difficulty of the decision-making. “Doctor Who does take a lot of time, but it’s a wonderful use of it,” he says.

“It’s special”, he continues. “I’m lucky enough to be in touch with other Doctors, and we all agree how extraordinary it is to be in this position. To decide to leave is a tough decision for everybody. [It was] very tough for Steven [Moffat], so I’m just putting it off for as long as possible.”

The news that current show runner Steven Moffat would be leaving at the end of series 10 broke earlier this year, making way for Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall to take over the reins for series 11.

If Capaldi does decide to stay on and work alongside Chris Chibnall it will coincide with a special birthday. “That would be a good way to spend your 60th birthday, don’t you think?” he says.

But before the current Doctor makes up his mind we still have lots of new Who to look forward to. The Christmas special is now only 3 weeks away, an episode that Capaldi will be watching with his family “from behind the sofa!” he confesses.

“I’ve always watched it, from before I was the Doctor,” he explains. “I’d watch it with my daughter, and it became part of our Christmas Day”.
