The former Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, has joined the cast of The Suicide Squad according to Deadline
In recent days, former Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi debuted a bold new look. With his distinctive shock of white hair completely shaved off, it was widely assumed to be for a new part. We now have a better idea of just what that part may be, as Deadline reports that he is the latest star to be cast in James Gunn’s supervillain sequel The Suicide Squad.
The Suicide Squad follows a team of DC Comics supervillains conscripted into the US government’s top secret Task Force X. Nicknamed ‘the Suicide Squad,’ these former criminals use their special powers and skills to accomplish missions regular superheroes are too moral to take. With bombs implanted in their skulls, they’re also regarded as totally dispensable. And they know they’re as likely to be killed by their own side as the enemy.
The film is a follow up to the original Suicide Squad, which was the surprise hit of 2016, making £611m worldwide. As well as that, the sequel sees the director’s chair taken by James Gunn. Popular for his Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel Studios, Gunn’s presence has many excited for the new film.
Capaldi joins a squad of famous stars
Returning for the sequel is the first’s breakout star, Margot Robbie, as former psychiatrist turned mental patient Harley Quinn. Viola Davis also returns as Amanda Waller, the ruthless and cynical intelligence officer that assembles the team. As do Jai Courtney as unpredictable mercenary Captain Boomerang and Joel Kinnaman as Waller’s field leader Rick Flag. Meanwhile, Peter Capaldi joins the DC Universe alongside fellow newcomers David Dastmalchian and Daniela Melchior as Batman villains Polka-Dot Man and Ratcatcher, and Steve Agee as King Shark, the monsterous half-man/half-Great White.
Capaldi’s is one of a number of actors whose exact roles are being kept under wraps by director James Gunn. Idris Elba and Taika Waititi, who previously starred together in Thor: Ragnarok, are also known to be in the film. But, as with the former Twelfth Doctor, the parts they play have yet to be revealed.
Peter Capaldi as… Who?
Fans, of course, are already speculating. Could Peter Capaldi’s shaven head suggest that he’s playing iconic Batman villain Mr. Freeze? Often cited as one the more sympathetic villains in Batman’s rogues gallery, Dr. Viktor Fries is motivated simply by trying to obtain the materials and funds he needs to find a cure for his terminally ill wife. However, his experiments with cryogenically freezing her in the meantime go terribly wrong. He’s left unable to tolerate normal temperatures and required a cryogenic suit of armour to survive. Mr. Freeze has been previously portrayed by Otto Preminger, Eli Wallach (both in the 1960s Batman TV series), Nathan Darrow in the TV series Gotham, and most memorably Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film Batman & Robin.
But perhaps Capaldi is playing a completely new character, or the shaved head is to accommodate prosthetics or a wig. Only time will tell.
The Suicide Squad is scheduled for release on the 21st of August, 2021.
