The Sarah Jane Adventures: The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith: Episode Two

First Broadcast October 30th, 2009 @ 4.35pm (1.47m viewers)

David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor is probably the most popular incarnation of the Time Lord since the heyday of Tom Baker in the mid-1970’s. His youthful good looks, effervescent charm and boundless energy made him adored by audiences across the world. However after three series and a few additional specials Tennant bowed out of the role.

His last task, however, was to defeat The Trickster on The Sarah Jane Adventures. Filming on ‘The End of Time’ had already been completed. This episode, therefore, marked David Tennant’s final performance as The Doctor until he returned to the role for ‘The Day of the Doctor’ in 2013. His final line during production, “You two with me, spit spot”, was followed by a dash up a flight of stairs. And thus David Tennant’s time as The Doctor was over. Onscreen however the Tenth Doctor departed in a much more fitting way…

Memorable Moment (Spoiler Warning)

No one’s ever going to forget you.

There is a lovely moment at the very end of this episode when The Doctor departs. Sarah ponders whether she will ever ever see him again. As we would later see in ‘The End of Time: Part Two’ she would. However, her response to his request not to forget him is incredibly moving given the context of Tennant’s impending departure. When the time did arrive a few months later emotions could not be held back as viewers watched on through tear filled eyes as the Tenth Doctor regenerated.

And I know the legends of the Doctor. The man of ice and fire, who walked among gods, who once held the Key to Time in his hands.

The appearance of the Tenth Doctor generated an expected peak in the viewing figures for the programme. It was a treat for fans of the new series but another dialogue triumph appealed to fans of the classic era. Whilst on the surface a simplistic reference, it does remind viewers of the epic nature of The Doctor’s adventures. As implied in a cut piece of dialogue recorded for ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’, he is “far more than just another Time Lord”. And in this story David Tennant reminded us that he is ‘far more than just another Doctor!’
