Recently seen as Prince Phillip in Season 2 of The Crown, but probably still best remembered as the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith is set to be really busy. Recently there have been two casting announcements for upcoming films that he will be starring in.
The first of these is a very dark role in the film Charlie Says. Matt Smith has been cast in the role of notorious cult leader Charles Manson. The film is to be directed by Mary Harron, who is no stranger to dark material, best known for directing the adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho. Harron told the Hollywood Reporter that “Guinevere Turner’s script brings a fresh and unique perspective to the infamous story of the Manson murders and we have now found the perfect cast to bring it to life.”
The second piece of casting news is just as big as Matt Smith will be starring alongside Keira Knightley in thriller Official Secrets. Matt Smith’s role is yet to be revealed. Knightley will be playing Katherine Gunn who became known in 2003 for leaking secret information about illegal action taken by the United States regarding the invasion of Iraq. The film will be directed by Gavin Hood, whose recent political thriller Eye in the Sky was a really tense experience, which bodes well for this project.
As well as these films going into production Matt Smith also has multiple films in post-production. He will be portraying the life of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe from his rise to fame in the 19070’s to his untimely death in 1989. And also a horror film, Patient Zero, also starring Natalie Dormer and Stanley Tucci.
If you’re a fan of the Eleventh Doctor it would seem you’re going to have plenty of opportunities to catch him on the big screen in the near future.
