In a new BBC interview Pearl Mackie, the Doctors new companion has revealed that her character is gay.

This is new for Doctor Who as far as the companion is concerned but..“It shouldn’t be a big deal in the 21st Century. It’s about time isn’t it?” says Mackie. “That representation is important, especially on a mainstream show.”

Other Doctor Who characters such as Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and River Song (Alex Kingston) have never been afraid to hide their sexuality.

Being gay is not the main thing that defines her character – it’s something that’s part of her”, Mackie continues. “Something that she’s very happy and very comfortable with.”

To read more see the BBC interview and a short video at the BBC website. The video also contains a new scene from episode 1 ‘The Pilot’. You will find the full interview on the six o’clock news this evening as well as more on the site.
