Ncuti Gatwa changing his hair colour could be a small hint that he’ll be stepping aboard the TARDIS some day soon
All the best Doctor Who news stories these days seem to break on Instagram. Today’s news comes in the form of an Instagram story from our new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa. Gatwa, along with fellow incoming star Yasmin Finney, has been rocking Milan this week for Milan Fashion Week. Those photos and videos have featured him still sporting the blond hair fans first saw in his official unveiling. However, we know that that hair was part of his role as one of the Kens in the movie Barbie.
Barbie stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the version of Barbie and Ken the film focuses on. But it also features a number of the alternate version populating the world they live in. And these include the Ncuti Gatwa version of Ken. Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird, Little Women) is in the director’s chair for the project. So it promises to not be quite what you’d expect from a live action movie about the most famous doll in the world.

Jodie Whittaker’s has already filmed her half of the regeneration, and the 60th Anniversary is filming now. So Ncuti Gatwa’s first day on set could be very soon
However, Gatwa’s latest Instagram story shows him in the process of dying his hair back to its natural colour, accompanied by Amy Whitehouse’s Back to Black. It suggests that his role in the production of Barbie has now wrapped. It also hints at some Doctor Who news though. While Gatwa’s blond hair was for Barbie, fans were understanding uncertain if he would be keeping it as the Doctor. We now seem to have our answer for that, and it looks as if his Doctor will be showing off his own hair colour. (And still not ginger either!)
Moreover, the fact that the actor is actively dying his hair black, rather than growing out the blond dye or letting it fade, might mean he has a reason. Perhaps even that he’ll be needed on the Doctor Who set sooner rather than later. That’s certainly possible given that Jodie Whittaker’s regeneration scene is expected to be broadcast about four months from now. If Gatwa is to cameo in that final episode for the Thirteenth Doctor then they’ll need to be filming his half of the changeover reasonably soon.
That said, we still don’t know how the regeneration will be handled, or how David Tennant’s character from the 60th Anniversary plays into it all. Perhaps Gatwa’s incarnation of the Doctor will actually appear first towards the end of the anniversary episodes currently filming. In which case, again, he might be filming his scene or scenes soon.
Either way, there’s reason to believe yet again that there are exciting Doctor Who times ahead.

Doctor Who continues this Autumn with the Thirteenth Doctor’s final episode, ahead of Ncuti Gatwa’s first full episode next year
Ncuti Gatwa will make his brief appearance as The Fourteenth Doctor at the end of the Centenary Special.
No he won’t. That’d be David Tennant.
