Anjli Mohindra and Laura Fraser have been announced as guest stars for the new season of Doctor Who

Anjli Mohindra and Laura Fraser have become the latest names to join the line up of guest stars for Doctor Who Series 12. Neither of them are strangers to telefantasy, and Mohindra is already a fully fledged member of the Whoniverse family.

Mohindra will be well known to Doctor Who fans already. After all, she played Rani Chandra in Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures. Rani was one of the brave junior heroes who helped former companion Sarah Jane Smith save the Earth on a weekly basis from Series 2 to Series 5. Mohindra worked with both David Tennant and Matt Smith on that show, so Jodie Whittaker will be her third Doctor.

But don’t expect her to be playing anyone as sweet and brave as Rani this time though…

“To be bringing some terror to the joint was rather fun indeed,” she says on her new role, “and of course after all these years, to work with Bradley [Walsh] again!” In fact, her Series 12 appearance seems set to see her swap sides with Walsh, who played the monsterous clown Odd Bob in the Sarah Jane Adventures story Day of the Clown.

But she also had praise for the rest of the regular cast. “As a huge fan of the last series, it’s a bit of a dream come true getting to work opposite Jodie, Mandip, Tosin. There’s something undeniably special about Jodie’s Doctor.”

Since The Sarah Jane Adventures ended, Anjli Mohindra’s remained a regular presence on our screens. She’s been seen in everything from Russell T Davies’ Cucumber, to last year’s massive hit show Bodyguard.

Laura Fraser finally steps into the world of Doctor Who

Meanwhile, Laura Fraser will be guest starring in a different episode elsewhere in Series 12. She’s enjoyed a long and successful career in British television ever since playing the pivotal Door in Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere. That 1996 drama saw her pursued though London’s supernatural underworld by Peter Capaldi’s Angel Islington. While in Russell T Davies’ Casanova she played Henrietta, the one true love in the life of Casanova (David Tennant). While other other roles have included A Knight’s Tale, Breaking Bad, and The Missing.

But stepping into the Doctor Who world for the first time has been a special highlight. “I watched Doctor Who every week as a child,” she says “so it was a massive thrill to be asked to take part in such an iconic show.” Describing her role as “an intense character,” Fraser says she “couldn’t resist playing her.” And she can’t wait for viewers to get to see it. “I love this episode!”

Doctor Who Series 12’s Executive Producer, Matt Strevens, is full of praise for his new guest stars. “It was a real joy to welcome Anjli and Laura to the show. We’ve wanted to work with them since we started and have found the perfect characters for them to show off their talent and range – both formidable in very different ways.”
