| Capaldi in The Musketeers |
The latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, out today, contains a fascinating interview with writer Steven Moffat. In it, he discusses the relationship between companion Clara (played by Jenna Coleman) and The Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) in Doctor Who Series 8. The current showrunner says:
“Now we’re going to give her a Doctor who’s not like that at all [The Eleventh Doctor], who’s a much older, fiercer, madder, less reliable Doctor, who leads her a merry dance. And she’s trying to keep him a secret and she’s now working in a school…”
On The Twelfth Doctor’s character, Moffat comments that he will be more akin to Tom Baker and Christophe Eccleston, being “mad and dangerous and difficult” and not a “quirky young man” like Matt Smith and David Tennant.
On a possible return for River Song, the writer added: “I’m slightly tempted, because I imagine Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston would be absolutely hilarious together…”

I can't help but agree with you on that one.
River Song is one of the most interesting companions ever, so I'm actually really looking forward to see how she might interact with Capaldi's version of the Doctor. Her main story may be played off, but we know that she's supposed to have known several of his regenerations. Bring it on.
I'd love to see River Song back again! I hope they don't go TOO fierce/mad/less reliable. Really happy that Clara is back.
River Song, when written well, is an absolutely welcomed character on the show. Kingston and Capaldi together on screen would be an AMAZING pair to watch for an adventure or two.
As far as Clara goes, she's still welcomed to the party, but her song must end at some point. To be honest, it wouldn't hurt the Doctor to acquire a small tribe in the TARDIS (not unlike the 5th Doctor), just to see some interaction that is NOT doe-eyed nor hero-worshiping.

Steven Moffat's idea of 'hilarious' is about as funny as cancer.
Moffat comparing Capaldi to Eccleston & Baker is good news; this is the kind of path I want the Doctor's character to take.
And I'd like to see River put to rest for a while, even retired. Her story was with Matt's Doctor, and the goodbye at the end of Name of the Doctor seemed pretty final. However, River does say at one point 'I know all of your faces', so I bet we will see her back for at least one of Capaldi's stories.
I'm with itzwicks in that I wouldn't mind seeing several companions, including a well-plotted River Song and others…maybe even a male companion like Jamie.
