Matt Smith, who older readers may remember played the eleventh Doctor Who between 2010 and 2013, has delighted fans by singing the theme tune.

This occurred at the Wizard World convention in Portland, Oregon during a panel that Smith was part of and was met with great approval from attendees.

A number of other guests from the worlds of Doctor Who were in attendance. These included Arthur Darvill, who played Rory Williams opposite Smith between 2010 and 2012 (as well as having a prolific role in Broadchurch); Alex Kingston, who has played River Song (the Doctor’s wife and Rory’s daughter) since 2008, right up to the most recent episode; and John Barrowman, Captain Jack Harkness since 2005 in Doctor Who and Torchwood.

Barrowman has also recently reprised the role for Big Finish’s incarnation of Torchwood (produced by James Goss), having starred in three stories so far. The third of these, The Victorian Age, is released in March and sees Jack chasing an escaped extraterrestrial alongside Queen Victoria, who created Torchwood in the 2006 Doctor Who episode Tooth and Claw.

Also in attendance were artist and illustrator Simon Fraser, who has worked on the Eleventh Doctor comic strip series, and sketch card artist Sarah Wilkinson.

Since leaving the role of the Doctor just over two years ago, Smith has most notably starred in Terminator Genisys and the recently-released Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which have earned him great praise from fans and critics alike.

Smith has also recently caught fans’ interested by discussing the possibility of joining the ranks of Big Finish’s ‘new series’ Doctors, along with John Hurt and David Tennant. It seems certain that we will eventually get Eleventh Doctor audio stories, to plug all the gaps deliberately left by Steven Moffat, but fans probably shouldn’t get their hopes up for a return any time soon. What Smith essentially said was that he wouldn’t not do Big Finish, rather than confirming he would be stepping back into the TARDIS any time soon.

Matt Smith and his 2010-2013 co-star Karen Gillan will also be appearing at the Cleveland and Las Vegas Wizard World conventions. Find out more here.
