It is with deep sadness that BlogtorWho reports the death of Doctor Who actor John Challis.

Doctor Who fans will of course remember John Challis as Scorby in ‘The Seeds of Doom‘. The uncompromising henchman had several altercations with Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor before meeting an untimely demise at the hands of Krynoid-controlled vegetation whilst attempting to escape through a pond. Challis would happily recall the story for DVD bonus features and commentaries but also for the 111th edition of Toby Hadoke’s Who’s Round podcast. A further contribution to the Doctor Who universe was as Rosser, an incarnation of Drax, in the Big Finish audio ‘The Trouble with Drax‘.

To millions of television viewers however John Challis will forever be remembered as the second-hand car salesman Boycie in ‘Only Fools and Horses‘. Boycie would get his own spin-off show ‘The Green Green Grass‘ opposite on-screen wife Sue Holderness (Marlene). Together they also became a popular pairing on the convention circuit. Challis however appeared in a wide variety of British television shows including all the obvious programmes such as Z Cars, Coronation Street and Howard’s Way through to a more recent role as Monty Staines in Benidorm.
