Doctor Who star Jodie Whittaker has to revisit One Night in a tense new drama from the writer of The Slap and Taboo
Jodie Whittaker’s first major role since leaving Doctor Who arrives this Autumn on Paramount+. One Night was filmed in Australia earlier this year, with Whittaker starring as Tess, one of three women who shared a secret tragedy two decades before. But now Simone (Nicola da Silva, Wentworth) has mined the event as inspiration for her novel. It’s a decision which reopens old wounds and upends the lives of all three.
The award-winning Emily Ballou (The Slap, Taboo) has created and written the six part drama. Meanwhile, Catherine Millar (The Twelve, The Secrets She Keeps) and Lisa Matthews (Doctor Doctor, The PM’s Daughter) are directors. One Night debuts on Paramount+ in Australia on the 1st of September. Paramount haven’t announced the UK drop date yet but with the nature of the modern streaming world, it will likely be the same day or not long after.
Jodie Whittaker will also be appearing on our screens this Autumn in Time Series 2 on BBC One. The second series on Jimmy McGovern’s acclaimed prison drama sees the former Doctor Who star as Orla, a newly arrived inmate.
One Night
Since then, Simone (Nicole da Silva) has harboured secret hopes of becoming a novelist but most of her haphazard attempts have been shoved into her bottom drawer. Now, at the age of 40, she has finally written the one story she could never get out of her mind, and her debut manuscript has become an unexpected overnight success.
But it soon becomes apparent that the devastating story the book tells doesn’t exclusively belong to her. At the heart of Simone’s novel is a tragedy which also happened to Tess (Jodie Whittaker) and Hat (Yael Stone), her two childhood best friends.
As it becomes harder to prise fact from fiction, one person’s memory and story from another’s, the book threatens to derail all their friendships, bringing old traumas to the surface of the small coastal community where they grew up, and stirring its perpetrators, who want to make it all go away.
