As already revealed, the first episode – titled “Doll no. 123” – will air at 9pm on Sunday 28th August. With Jenna Coleman (best known to Doctor Who fans as Clara Oswald) in the title role, the bumper-length 95-minute premiere will see the inexperienced 18-year-old Victoria becoming Queen in a glorious coronation but then struggling to cope with her new royal responsibilities. In this first chapter, she will also become enchanted with her Prime Minister Lord Melbourne, which leads to a bout of speculation which covers the crown in scandal.

The second episode of the series – titled “Ladies in Waiting” – will then air at 9pm the very next day, on Monday 29th August.

Throughout the new ITV series, viewers will be able to follow the early life of Queen Victoria, from her ascension to the throne at the tender age of 18, through to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert.

The series is also due to air on Masterpiece on PBS in the US from 15th January 2017.
