Tegan is back! Not that she ever really went away, thanks to Big Finish. Janet Fielding the woman behind the world’s most lost stewardess talks Davison, Whittaker and more to Blogtor Who

Janet Fielding is fast becoming Doctor Who’s go-to woman when anniversary celebrations are in order. Big Finish’s love letter to her original era to celebrate the Fifth Doctor’s fortieth anniversary, Forty, has just recently finished While in just a matter of weeks she’ll be back on TV as Tegan comes back for the BBC Centenary and meets the current (for now) incarnation, Jodie Whittaker in The Power of the Doctor.

Blogtor Who was recently privileged to have a chat with the iconic Doctor Who actor about over four decades working with different Doctors, her charity work, and what’s next.

On having worked with almost all the Doctors…

Well, I’ve had only two doctors I think on Big Finish, Sylvester McCoy and Peter [Davison]. And then I worked with Richard Hurndall, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, [and] Peter Davidson obviously [on 20th Anniversary special The Five Doctors], Colin Baker on Jim’ll Fix It…

I did Sylvester McCoy’s screen test.  I was Paul McGann’s agent when he got Doctor Who. I was the agent for Peter Capaldi’s wife, Elaine Collins, who was a very fine actress. No longer. She’s now a producer. And I was there when Peter Capaldi collected an Oscar for the best live short film [in 1994 for Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life]

And now obviously I worked with Jodie Whittaker from the new set [on next month’s The Power of the Doctor]

But if she had to name a favourite to work with…

Are you crazy? I am so not going to say who would be on my list of favourite doctors. That would be like signing my own death warrant. I run into these people at various fan conventions. No way José.

I don’t know Chris Eccleston. I don’t know Matt Smith. I don’t know Jo Martin who I think is pretty amazing. I know Jodie obviously. I think that’s right, isn’t it? Is that everybody?

I would like to do a story with the two doctors that I don’t know, which is Matt Smith and Chris Eccleston. But they’re the only two I don’t know.

On her Project MotorMouth charity conventions…

What happened was, I had cancer, and I figured it was good for emotional blackmail. Peter Davidon made the mistake of coming down and asking me what he could do. And I said, well, I don’t know, I figured I could raise some money for my charity. And so I said, you and your son-in-law, David, would you like to do a fan convention for me? And then they brought on Colin and Pete and Paul and Sylvester and everybody. And then Peter Capaldi agreed to do one for me when he got cast.

And the women, the female companions offered to do one as well. So it was really lovely. It was like feeling love bombed by the Doctor Who crowd when you were really at a pretty low ebb, I’ve got to admit.

On passing the torch…

[At] Project MotorHouse we do projects with young people in Ramsgate, which is a fairly deprived area. And they’re primarily photography based. And we are actually closing down at the end of September. But there is another group that want to continue our work. And so kind of morphing almost into another organisation called Ramsgate Arts Barge. Because I think kids would love to come down and do workshops on an arts barge in the harbour.
