Just who is Nardole?
He’s the silly fellow with a bobble hat and duffle coat from the last two Christmas specials. Sometimes his head is attached to a giant red robot of death, sometimes it isn’t. All we know is, he’s played by today’s birthday boy – Matt Lucas!
Comedy actor Lucas, who turns 43 today, is one of the newest additions to the TARDIS team. Since the beginning, he’s always played the funny man. He rose to fame as the drum-playing, score-keeping baby George Dawes in Shooting Stars. However, his biggest breakthrough would come in sketch show Little Britain, alongside David Walliams. Among Lucas’ famous characters are Andy “yeah I know!” Pipkin and Vicky “yeah but no but” Pollard. The series also boasted Fourth Doctor Tom Baker as its hilarious narrator.
The connections to Who don’t end there, either. Lucas’ first TV drama role was a supporting part in Russell T Davies’ Casanova starring David Tennant. He would later go on to play Tweedledee and Tweedledum in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. Lucas’ other film roles include Gnomeo and Juliet, Bridesmaids, and Paddington (which stars Peter Capaldi).
Lucas returned to the small screen in 2010 with sketch show Come Fly With Me. Again, this was alongside David Walliams, who appeared as Gibbis in Doctor Who’s The God Complex. Finally, at Christmas 2015, it was Lucas’ turn to join The Doctor on screen. He debuted as Narolde in The Husbands of River Song in a comic relief role. Ultimately though, his head was chopped off by Hydroflax. Woops. Luckily, The Twelfth Doctor reassembled him by the time of The Return of Doctor Mysterio. In this superhero themed 2016 Christmas Special, he filled more of a companion role. Why? To keep The Doctor company in the TARDIS and stop him from getting lonely. He had just lost both Clara and River, after all…!
Lucas will return in Doctor Who Series 10, alongside Peter Capaldi and new companion Pearl Mackie. We’ve no idea what he’ll get up to, or what secrets lay in store for his character. Nevertheless, we can’t wait to see more of Nardole very soon!
Join us in wishing many happy returns to Matt today. We have you have a good one! Hip, hip, Who-rray!
