She’s only officially been a part of the Whoniverse for just over a month, but it’s already time to celebrate in honour of our new companion – that’s right, it’s Pearl Mackie’s birthday!
Turning 29 today, Pearl is the up and coming actress that will soon be boarding the TARDIS alongside Peter Capaldi, succeeding Jenna Coleman’s Clara Oswald after she whizzed off at the end of Series 9 in her very own TARDIS diner. Pearl’s character, intriguingly named Bill, was introduced on BBC One on Saturday 23rd April this year during the half-time of Match of the Day Live – and what a spectacular entrance it was! Starring in her very own specially-made trailer, titled Friend From The Future, Bill and The Twelfth Doctor exchanged banter as they fled from the wrath of the Daleks, before running off to return to 2017 where new adventure await them.
We know very little about Bill at the moment, aside from the fact that she appears to be a fan of Prince, she has a keen eye for 1980s style fashion, and she always knows the right questions to ask – why isn’t there a naffed-off Dalek at the back that’s mistakenly been given two plungers instead of a gun?! There seems to be more than a little of fan-favourite Donna Noble’s quirky personality about her, and the back and forth between Mackie and Capaldi in her introductory two minutes alone have made her one to watch when the show returns next year. Pearl will be making her first proper appearance in the show in Series 10.
Currently, Pearl is performing on stage in the London West End production of ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’, and will be joining her co-star Peter Capaldi on set to start filming the new series very soon. We’re very excited to see what she has in store and can only speculate about what wild adventures The Doctor will be taking Bill on in her debut year!
In true wibbly wobbly timey wimey fashion, join us in wishing Pearl many happy returns and all the best for her Doctor Who journey still to come – happy birthday, love from your friends from the future!
