FIRST PLAY: Doctor Who Escape Hunt – Worlds Collide

Doctor Who Escape Hunt - Worlds Collide

Escape rooms are all the rage. In cities across the world, they have become a popular leisure activity. Now Escape Hunt, one of the world’s leading companies for escape rooms, have teamed up with BBC Studios to create a Doctor Who themed game.

The first Doctor Who Escape Hunt game, Worlds Collide, opens TODAY 16th January 2019 in Bristol with further venues in Leeds, Oxford, Manchester, Reading and Birmingham available in the next few weeks.  BlogtorWho was lucky enough to have an advanced play of this brand new game…

For those unfamiliar with the concept of Escape Hunt, a group of friends are locked in a room and must solve a series of puzzles before they can escape. In Doctor Who Escape Hunt: Worlds Collide the stakes are even higher – there’s 60 minutes to prevent a Cybermen invasion of Earth!

The Set-Up

The Doctor needs you: a tear in space and time has been detected, and the Cybermen are about to break through!

Step into the future. Enter the offices of ChronosCorp HQ, where eccentric billionaire Alastair Montague’s efforts to develop commercial time travel have caused a tear in the fabric of space and time. The Cybermen are ready to take advantage and attack Earth.

You, the Doctor’s friends, must investigate the incident. The remains of Montague, his prototype time engine and the extensive collection of time-related artefacts acquired over the course of his experiments, are all that you have to work with.

In just 60 minutes the Cybermen will break through. The fate of the universe is in your hands. Take too long and the human race will be “upgraded”.

Doctor Who Escape Hunt – Worlds Collide

This reviewer had not been to an escape room before and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Doctor Who references are plentiful but wouldn’t overshadow the experience for escape room devotees. Jodie Whittaker and Nicholas Briggs have recorded some audio material to assist the game and there are plenty of other lovely touches. Some knowledge of Doctor Who might be of help but is certainly not essential. The puzzles are clever and require not just intelligence but also skill to complete.

This isn’t a replacement for the much missed Doctor Who Experience and I certainly preferred the immersive walkthrough attraction that took you on an epic adventure. Similarly, unless the game changes its story regularly it is unlikely to work with multiple visits. The fun will surely dissipate quite quickly when you go in knowing all the answers.

But for that hour or so that you are in there it is a lot of fun. Plus you have that tangible sense of success or failure if you manage, or fail, to escape from the room! If you are a fan of escape rooms then I’m sure you will thoroughly enjoy the experience. If you are a fan of Doctor Who then you will definitely enjoy it.

So get your friends together and plan your escape to Doctor Who Escape Hunt: Worlds Collide. Can you defeat the Cybermen?
