This past Wednesday, I was lucky enough to participate in the latest Doctor Who event at Birmingham’s Escape Hunt in Resort World. Following the success of Doctor Who: World Collect, BBC Studio and Escape Hunt combined their creativity into forming another live escape game,
For those unfamiliar with the concept of escape rooms, you get the chance to play a Doctor Who adventure and battle wits against time. You and a group of your friends are locked in a room and must solve a series of puzzles before you can escape the room.
In ‘Doctor Who: A Dalek Awakens‘ the players are on board a doomed spaceship that has been invaded by a Dalek. The Dalek has tapped into the ship’s power system and is preparing for a path of ruthless extermination of all onboard. The Doctor has left the lives of the passengers in your hands as you and our team as you must stop the Dalek by shutting down the ship’s power.
If you recall, Blogtor’s Bedwyr Gullidge had an advanced play of Escape Hunt’s last theme escape room. Bedwyr and his team convincingly completed the escape and defeated the Cybermen. So there was a lot of pressure to match his success.
Well, not so much. Unfortunately, this adventure wasn’t quite so easy, and certainly, we didn’t escape in time. If the Doctor didn’t arrive to save the ship, all would have died. Apart from having my ego bruised, we did manage to get through 4 of the five systems turned on but didn’t reach the final stage. I will take solace in the fact that the other preview teams weren’t successful either.
If you like puzzles, this game is for you. And while the Doctor Who theme designed well into the event, it isn’t necessary to be a Doctor Who fan to be successful and enjoy the escape room. But what is essential is to work together as a team. Each task builds on the previous one, and when we combined our ideas to solve the problems, my team and I started to speed up. There was one puzzle that we had intellectually resolved, but didn’t seem to be coordinated enough to execute the activity, and wasted a lot of time on that stage. Other than that the gameplay was well executed and we’re sure that over the next few days these small niggles will be resolved.
Doctor Who: A Dalek Awakens is a more challenging game than the previous adventure by Escape Hunt. And we are sure fans of both escape rooms and/or Doctor Who will enjoy this new adventure.
Now I’ll have to get back and finish the game. Can lose to Bedwyr again.
