The cover for the new issue of Doctor Who Magazine has been revealed. It features David Bradley as The First Doctor. The issue contains an interview with the new First Doctor from the set of the Christmas Special.
Within the interview, he discusses the importance of getting the portrayal of the First Doctor right. The cover quote from the interview has Bradley stating “I’ve got to capture his spirit and energy”
It’s a really exciting prospect for Christmas day to see the First Doctor come back to our screens and team up with the current incarnation. From the footage in the trailer or Bradley’s brief appearance of Series 10, you could easily be fooled that he actually is William Hartnell. The likeness and performance is uncanny. But it is no surprise after David Bradley’s superlative performance as William Hartnell in Mark Gatiss’ ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’ in 2013.
It bodes well for a stirring, emotional and poignant send-off for current Doctor Peter Capaldi in the Christmas episode ‘Twice Upon a Time’. It’ll also, hopefully, be a fitting send off to showrunner Steven Moffat, who has steered the good ship Doctor Who for the last eight years. Through the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctor’s tenure, as well as the 50th Anniversary celebrations. What better way to celebrate than going back to where it all began?
And who’d have thought that the First Doctor would grace the cover of Doctor Who Magazine again? But not in a retrospective capacity, an actual performance by a new actor, and that he would be featuring in a brand new episode.
We should have guessed really, all the signs were there. The First doctor told us that “One day I shall come back, yes, I shall come back. Until then there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward with all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.”
Doctor Who Magazine Issue #519 is in stores from Thursday, November 16th.
