Millie Gibson began filming her first post-Doctor Who role this weekend, taking a starring role in The Forsyte Saga

Filming only concluded on the second season of the re-relaunched Doctor Who days ago, and we won’t even see the last of those episodes on screen until some time next year. But already Millie Gibson, who co-stars in those first two seasons as Ruby Sunday, has started filming on her next project. Gibson takes on a leading role as Irene Forsyte in the latest adaptation of John Galsworthy’s Nobel Prize winning book series The Forsyte Saga. The books follow the fortunes of one large, sprawling upper middle class family across the decades from the 1970s to the 1920s. Though the focus shifts slightly from book to book, bringing different family members to the fore, the central characters remain solicitor Soames Forsyte and his wife Irene. Joshua Orpin (Titans) stars as Soames alongside Millie Gibson’s Irene.

Gibson and Osprin will lead a cast of other familiar names from shows like Downton Abbey and Poldark

The new Forsyte Saga comes from the same team responsible for the recent hit adaptation of Poldark. The first series of the new adaptation concentrates on events from the first book The Man of Property, in which beautiful young Irene marries successful and wealthy solicitor Soames Forsyte. But she quickly realizes that Soames regards himself as a collector of property, and her as just another object in his collection. As her new husband becomes ever more controlling, Irene plans a way to regain her freedom.

The first scene filmed of the new series was Soames and Irene’s wedding, with Millie Gibson revealing the right red curls she’ll sport in the new role. The cast also features Jack Davenport (Coupling, Pirates of the Caribbean) as Irene’s new father-in-law James, Tuppence Middleton (Sense8, Downton Abbey) as Soames’ cousin Frances, Stephen Moyer and uncle “Old Joylon,” architect of the family’s fortunes, and Eleanor Tomlinson (Poldark) as Louisa.

This will be the seventh major adaptation of The Forsyte Saga, from a silent movie in 1920 to a successful ITV adaptation than ran for two seasons in 2002-3.

The new six part series is being made for American network PBS Masterpiece, with a UK broadcaster still to be announced.
