Madame Rouge first appeared in Doom Patrol #86 in 1964. In the comics, she’s a French actress, Laura De Mille, who develops Dissociative Identity Disorder after a traumatic car crash. Her ‘Madame Rouge’ personality joins the Brotherhood of Evil who perform experimental surgeries to permanently repress her Laura persona. They also make her a mistress of disguise with shapeshifting powers. Over the years, the Doom Patrol and the Brotherhood battle for her mind, each trying to make one personality dominant. Ultimately however, her aspects join forces to swear revenge on both heroes and villains for trying to control their lives. Exactly how the Gomez version’s story will play out on television has yet to be revealed. But it’s understood Madame Rouge will the ‘Big Bad’ of the season, recurring in every episode.

Michelle Gomez joins Doctor Who veterans Timothy Dalton and Jovian Wade in the Doom Patrol cast

Gomez joins a number of former Doctor Who guest stars on the show. Doom Patrol tells the story of a team of misfit B-list superheroes. Treated as freaks and losers by the public and more famous heroes alike, they specialize in the most bizarre and surreal threats to planet Earth. And it stars Timothy Dalton, who played Rassilon in Doctor Who’s The End of Time, as Dr. Niles ‘the Chief’ Caulder, the scientist who brings the Doom Patrol together. Meanwhile, Jovian Wade, Rigsy in the Doctor Who episodes Flatline and Face the Raven, co-stars as Victor Stone, aka Cyborg. In this version, Cyborg’s a superhero rising star who passes up the chance to join the Justice League to become part of the Doom Patrol instead.

Other castmembers include Brendan Fraser (The Mummy) as Robotman and Diane Guerrero (Orange is the New Black) as Crazy Jane. Meanwhile, Matt Bomer (American Horror Story) is Negative Man and April Bowlby (Drop Dead Diva) plays Elasti-Girl.

Doom Patrol returns to HBO Max later this year

Doom Patrol is carried by streaming service HBO Max in America but currently has no home in the United Kingdom. However seasons 1 and 2 are available on DVD and Blu-ray from all good UK stockists (and are highly recommended by Blogtor). Michelle Gomez can currently be seen as the mysterious, and effortlessly violent, Miranda Croft in The Flight Attendant on Sky One, all episodes streaming now. Meanwhile, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, co-starring Gomez as Madam Satan, recently came to an end after two seasons, with all episodes still available on Netflix.
