Catherine Tate heads down under to become Queen of Oz as her new sitcom arrives on BBC One this month
Catherine Tate may be returning to the world of Doctor Who in November, but fans won’t have to wait nearly that long to see her return to BBC One. Her new sitcom Queen of Oz arrives on the 16th of June. All six episodes drop on iPlayer following episode one’s BBC One broadcast.
Catherine Tate stars as Her Royal Highness Princess Georgiana. Or at least she was a princess until recently… Georgiana is the black sheep of a fictional British Royal Family. A PR disaster, she’s lived her spoilt, party-girl life on the front pages of the tabloids. On the back of her latest scandal her father, the King, makes the unprecedented move of abdicating his Australian throne in favour of his daughter. It is hoped that giving her some real responsibility will finally be the making of her. And if it isn’t, at least she’ll be 10,000 miles away from London.
Accompanied by a useless entourage, Queen Georgiana of Australia goes kicking and screaming to a country she has zero interest in beyond the Hemsworth Brothers.
In the first episode the newly crowned (and jetlagged) Queen causes an immediate PR disaster
In the first episode the King and Queen of England send Princess Georgie off to Australia to become their Queen. It’s an effort to get their daughter Georgie as far away from London as possible. At the same time they hope to prevent Australia from leaving the Commonwealth. The new Queen arrives along with her new staff, headed by Director of Communications Zoe (Jenna Owen, Thor: Love and Thunder). She’s also helped and hindered by Private Secretary Bernard (Robert Coleby, Paradise Beach), Head of Security Officer Marc (Rob Collins, Ten Pound Poms), Lady In Waiting Anabel (Niky Wardley, The Catherine Tate Show), and Master of the Household Weiwei (Anthony Brandon Wong, The PM’s Daughter).
A welcome reception is Georgie’s first public appearance in Australia. But an offensive faux pas from the jetlagged new Queen makes the night go from bad to worse.
