The BBC have officially confirmed that Series 12 will premiere on New Year’s Day, and revealed the story title as Spyfall

Doctor Who was originally announced as returning in early 2020. Even then some had speculated that the most likely premiere data was New Year’s Day itself. That speculation has only grown in volume as the window for the launch of Jodie Whittaker’s second season was refined first to ‘very early 2020’ and then as being part of the festive lineup. But at last the date is officially confirmed. So circle the 1st of January on your shiny new copies of the Doctor Who Official Calendar 2020. But we also now know the title of the first story of Series 12… Spyfall.

The title ties with the Doctor’s appearance in the recent trailer sporting a Paul Smith tuxedo overcoat and bow tie, and introducing herself as “Doctor, The Doctor.” And with the trailer also showing the suited and booted Doctor in a motorcycle chase, it looks like Spyfall will be giving us the full James Bond homage experience. It’s also previously been announced that Spyfall will guest star Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry CBE. They can also be seen in the recent trailer. Fry is the M style figure giving the Doctor her mission. While Henry appears as a baddie happily shooting at the pursuing Doctor.

Spyfall will be the first two-part story of the Whittaker era

Spyfall will be a two part story, the show’s first since 2017’s World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls. And once the norm for serials in the 20th century, it appears this is the first time since The End of Time that a two-parter won’t have individual episode titles. The second part of Spyfall will air on Sunday the 5th of January. Both episodes are written by showrunner Chris Chibnall.

Doctor Who will return to Sundays for the rest of Series 12

The remaining eight episodes of Series 12 will follow on subsequent Sundays, following the same pattern as last season. With Cybermen and Judoon confirmed as returning monsters, alongside new threats like giant alien scorpions, flocks of hostile bird creatures, and even a menace that force its way into the TARDIS, Series 12 looks action packed.
