David Tennant plays the villainous care retirement village owner Ian Ventham in Netflix’s star studded adaptation of best-selling novel The Thursday Murder Club
David Tennant’s role in upcoming film The Thursday Murder Club has been confirmed. The former Doctor Who star plays Ian Ventham in the Netflix cosy crime thriller based on Richard Osman’s best-selling novel. Ventham is the owner of the former aristocratic mansion Cooper’s Chase, and its Willows nursing home where the main characters live. Manipulative, vain, and greedy, Ventham is deeply unpopular with the residents. None more so than Ron Ritchie, played by Pierce Brosnan. The retired activist is determined to get Ventham out by any means necessary, leading the protests against Ventham’s plans to bulldoze the historic graveyard on the site.

But there are bigger problems ahead. There’s a brutal murder, and Ron’s son is the prime suspect. To prove his innocence, Brosnan’s character teams up with the rest of the star studded Thursday Murder Club. Helen Mirren is Elizabeth the shrewd and determined founder of the club, and retired secret agent. Celia Imrie (The Bells of St. John) is Joyce, a former nurse and silver surfer who helps smooth things over for the more plain spoken Joyce. Finally Sir Ben Kingsley is Ibrihim. The retried psychiatrist’s insights are vital to the murder hunt as the bodies stack up.
The film adaptation also features Richard E Grant (The Curse of Fatal Death, Scream of the Shalka) as Bobby Tanner, and Ingrid Oliver (Doctor Who’s Osgood) as Elizabeth’s daughter Joanna. Osman’s novel’s mix of humour and death launched a whole series of sequels, and even more impersonators. Now the story that kick started the 2020s’ cosy crime craze is finally coming to life.
The murder and mayhem hits Netflix later this summer, with the crime comedy thriller arriving on the 28th of August.
