The countdown to goodbye starts here as promotion of The Power of the Doctor moves up a gear!
Originally a well deserved Doctor Who Magazine exclusive, the BBC have now officially announced the title of next month’s episode: The Power of the Doctor. They’ve also revealed the key art for the ninety minute special, which will be Jodie Whittaker’s final episode.
Incoming showrunner Russell T Davies, who takes the reigns with next year’s 60th Anniversary specials, has described The Power of the Doctor, saying “It’s fantastic. That is gorgeous, with lots of surprises.”
The promotional photos and teaser trailer already released certainly suggest we’re in for an action packed feature length adventure. Former companions Tegan and Ace are back, along with Kate Stewart and UNIT. And in the opposite corner, the Master returns with the Cybermen, Daleks, and even the Cybermen/Time Lord hybrids the Cybermasters in tow. Ashad the Lone Cyberman is back too, apparently, but how? The godlike entity that personifies Time itself has prophesied the Doctor’s death. So is it somehow involved too?
Meanwhile there are reports of even more surprises to come when The Power of the Doctor airs next month as part of the week long BBC 100 celebrations. Will we maybe see even more former companions? And with the special doing its part to mark the BBC Centenary, should we expect more “kisses to the past” and the show’s 59 year history?
We’ll have to wait to find out. The only thing we know for sure is that this is the final episode for not just Jodie Whittaker, but also Mandip Gill and John Bishop. Ncuti Gatwa is ready and waiting in the wings to receive the TARDIS key, and the Doctor’s regeneration is at hand. But how will Yaz and Dan leave the TARDIS? Could she be about to face one of the greatest tragedies of all her lives?
