The classic 1990s Doctor Who radio plays live again in a special box set of vinyl records

1993 was Doctor Who’s 40th anniversary. But, unlike the massive celebration of the 50th, it was a low key affair. The show was off-air, perhaps forever, and the general public seemed to have moved on. But BBC Radio marked the anniversary year with a very ambitious idea – resurrect Doctor Who for a special story on radio. The result was The Paradise of Death. The new adventure reunited Jon Pertwee, Elisabeth Sladen and Nicholas Courtney as the Third Doctor, Sarah Jane, and the Brigadier. It was even written by Doctor Who TV producer, writer and director, Barry Letts.

The addition of guest cast including Peter Miles (Genesis of the Daleks, Doctor Who and the Silurians, Invasion of the Dinosaurs) also helps makes it a perfect slice of 70s style Doctor Who. Yet it also stretched the formula in ways never seen on TV. After all, it transported the Brig to an alien jungle where he uses his military experience to lead a revolution.

Such was the success of Paradise of Death that it was followed in 1996 by a follow up, The Ghosts of N-Space. Broadcast shortly after Jon Pertwee’s death, it would be his final performance as the Doctor.  This time the Doctor, Sarah Jane and the Brigadier are in Italy. There they help the Brig’s Uncle Mario (Harry Towb, Terror of the Autons) who is under threat from mobsters.  But it quickly turns out that organized crime gangs are the least of their problems as horrific Lovecraftian monsters seek to break through into our universe from beyond.
