There ARE such things as The Macra Terror DVDs and Blu-Rays! BBC Studios have announced that classic Patrick Troughton serial The Macra Terror is finally coming in 2019
After months of speculation, BBC Studios have confirmed that a new animated version of classic ‘lost’ Doctor Who story The Macra Terror has been created. The story has long been missing in its entirety, save a few seconds of clips. It has never been seen since its first broadcast in 1967.
The Macra Terror sees the TARDIS bring the Doctor (Patrick Troughton), Jamie (Frazer Hines), Ben (Michael Craze), and Polly (Anneke Wills) to a human mining colony centuries in the future. But some scuttling terror is stirring in the depths of the mines. Meanwhile the odd behaviour of the colonists creates a mystery the Doctor is determined to solve. Above all, the Doctor and his friends must challenge the one supreme law of the colony – “THERE ARE NO SUCH THINGS AS MACRA!”
This is only the second time that animation has been used to re-create a completely missing story. Previous animations have instead focused on plugging the gaps of missing episodes in stories which largely exist. Fully animated, all four 25 minute episodes will be released in DVD, Blu-Ray and Steelbook formats on the 18th of March 2019. The animation has been done in both Black and White (as originally transmitted) and in colour.
Retailers such as Amazon and HMV will be taking pre-orders for The Macra Terror from midnight tonight.
The Macra Terror animation will also be supported by a British Film Institute screening on the 16th of March 2019. Tickets will go on sale to BFI members on Tuesday 5th February with public sale opening on Tuesday 12th February. Further information will be available soon from the BFI.
