The Doctor plays his first game with the Toymaker on steelbook, blu-ray, and DVD this June

The upcoming animated edition of The Celestial Toymaker has a release date. The Doctor Who 1966 missing story will be out on Blu-ray, DVD, and Steelbook on the 10th of June. In addition, we now also have the cover art for that Steelbook edition, alongside the previously reported DVD/Blu-ray art.

Of the four episodes in the serial, only The Final Test exists in the archives, with the other three episodes surviving on audio thanks to the home recording of fans. However, an animated version of the entire story has now been made and will be out in June. While many had been initially skeptical of its CGI approach, the response to its preview showing at the BFI in March was overwhelming positive. The result pushes the story beyond anything that would have been possible in studio. It’s an approach suited the surreal setting of the extra-dimensional Toyroom, which is now populated with giant toy robots, playing card people, and life-sized dolls.

The new release also includes an upgraded reconstruction of the story using the remaining episode, the soundtrack, and ‘telesnap’ stills of the missing episodes taken on transmission. It aims to recreate how the original television story would have looked as closely as possible. So whichever approach you prefer, this two disc set has you covered.

The Celestial Toymaker introduces the Toymaker, the all-powerful villain recently seen again in 60th Anniversary special The Giggle. As referenced in that episode, the First Doctor arrives in the Toyroom and quickly he and his companions Steven and Dodo are forced to play for their lives. If they lose, they’ll join the ranks of the Toymaker’s playthings… forever.

Doctor Who: The Celestial Toymaker

When the TARDIS lands in the Celestial Toyroom, its occupants meet a new and deadly opponent. The Toymaker rules this ethereal kingdom, and he desires the Doctor, Steven and Dodo to become his perpetual playthings. While Steven and Dodo face a series of challenges posed by clowns, ballerinas and living playing cards, the Doctor is challenged to play the fiendish Trilogic Game against the Toymaker himself. His only hope of escape is to beat the powerful entity at his own game…

Doctor Who: The Celestial Toymaker can be pre-ordered now on Blu-ray, DVD and Steelbook. However, the release date is still unknown for now.
